Several weeks before I dropped out of college, I had one final essay to write for my History of Hollywood course. The prompt allowed me to pick any significant part of film history to write about, and I decided to write my essay on the recent rise of Asian Americans in Hollywood. At the time I had an extremely pessimistic view on Asians in Hollywood. It was 2020, and even though we had our own movies, it still felt like we were being boxed into specific Hollywood roles. Boba tea drinkers, kungfu fighters, nerds. I ended the essay questioning whether anything really changed in Hollywood. It wasn't until 2022, when I saw the INSANE movie, Everything Everywhere All At Once, that my perspective on Hollywood completely shifted. This is that story.
